ABRSM or Trinity Music Exams: Which is Right for Your Child?

Music exams can be a rewarding milestone for a music student — celebrating their progress, building confidence, and opening doors to future opportunities. In Singapore, the ABRSM and Trinity College London exams are the two most recognised pathways. Both are respected by schools and universities worldwide, but they cater to different learning styles and goals.

Let’s break down the differences, and how Wolfgang Violin Studio prepares students for success in either exam.

1. ABRSM vs Trinity - Key Differences

Exam Focus & Style

ABRSM

- Classical foundation with structured requirements (scales, sight-reading, aural tests)

- Strong emphasis on technical precision

- Theory exam (Grade 5) required for higher practical grades

Trinity

- Flexible repertoire—classical, jazz, rock, pop, and even own-choice pieces

- Performance-oriented; feels like a "mini-recital

- No mandatory theory exams (but recommended)

ABRSM is probably the more familiar name in Singapore, because they have had a longer runway. It’s focus is on classical music and has been around since the 1800s. When your child takes an ABRSM exam, he or she is tested not just on how well they play, but also on his or her musical understanding, aural skills, and sight-reading in face to face exams. Currently digital exams are offered.

Trinity is a great choice and is especially popular with students who like flexibility. Your child wants to perform pieces that suit his or her style or explore contemporary genres? Trinity gives them more freedom to pick the repertoire. There’s even a Rock & Pop track! — yes, they can do a graded exam singing or playing Queen or Taylor Swift!

Unlike ABRSM, Trinity doesn’t make Theory Grade 5 exam mandatory before being able to sit for Grade 6 practical — so if you do not want that to hold back advanced grade exams for your child, Trinity will be a better alternative.

2. Which Suits Your Child, ABRSM or Trinity?

Which one is better you might ask?

Honestly? It’s a preference rather than ‘better’ . Some kids like the structure and some perceive the ‘prestige’ of ABRSM. Others feel more inspired with Trinity’s modern approach.

The good news? At Wolfgang Violin Studio, we prepare students for both — and a team of teachers well experienced in the exams will help you choose what suits your child best.

As a simple guide:

Choose ABRSM if: Your child thrives on structure, enjoys classical music, or may pursue music academically.

Choose Trinity if: They prefer creative freedom, play contemporary styles, or want a less rigid exam experience.
